Shri Pasumarty Venu Gopala Krishna Sarma, a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, was born in 1933 in the village of Kuchipudi, Andhra Pradesh. He received extensive training in Kuchipudi dance from revered Gurus Chinta Venkataramayya and Vedantam Lakshmi Narayana Sastry. In addition to his dance education, he also honed his musical skills under the tutelage of Yeleswarapu Seetha Ramanjaneyulu. Throughout his career, Sarma made vital contributions to Kuchipudi dance as both a performer and a teacher. He was particularly renowned for his performances in Kuchipudi dance-dramas and yakshaganas, where he frequently excelled in playing numerous lead roles, including female characters. His dedication to the art form extended to his leadership roles, serving as the Principal of Sri Siddhendra Kalakshetram. He was also an active member of prominent Kuchipudi dance groups, such as the Shri Venkataramayya Natya Mandali and the Sri Siddhendra Kalakshetram troupe, for many years. As a guru, Shri Pasumarty Venu Gopala Krishna Sarma trained a large number of students, ensuring the continuity and enrichment of the Kuchipudi tradition. Among his notable disciples is Pasumarthy Ramalinga Sastry. In recognition of his profound contributions and excellence in Kuchipudi dance, he was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987.
