🪔 About

Govind Pillai is a leading Australian Bharatanatyam practitioner, choreographer, teacher, and director, based in Melbourne (Naarm). He directs Karma Dance Inc., a classical and contemporary Indian dance company and teaching academy. Pillai's journey in Bharatanatyam began with informal lessons from his sister, leading to formal training. He credits Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer Hamsa Venkat (Samskriti School of Dance) as a significant influence and has also explored contemporary dance and ballet. His artistic philosophy is characterized by a deep love for classical Indian dance, coupled with a commitment to challenging its traditional boundaries. His work often delves into themes of colonisation, gender diversity, prejudice, sexuality, and identity, aiming to reimagine the art form in a liberated context. Pillai has an international track record of sell-out productions and festival appearances, having choreographed, directed, and performed at prominent venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Victorian Arts Centre, Midsumma Festival, and Woodford Folk Festival. His productions have toured to cities including Sydney, Toronto, Auckland, Melbourne, Hobart, and Byron Bay. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Pillai holds significant leadership roles in the Australian arts sector. He was elected Chairperson of the Board of the National Theatre (St Kilda) in July 2023, following nine years of service on its board. His past roles include Lead Male Dancer of Sanskriti Dance (Sydney), Vice President of Flare Dance Co. (Melbourne), and Dance Advisor to the Federation of Indian Music and Dance Inc. (Victoria). He is also a management consultant and a "rainbow parent". Awards & Honours: Nominee, Australian Dance Awards, Nominee, Green Room Awards, Nominee, Melbourne Fringe Awards, Best Dance & Physical Theatre (2020), Innovation in Culturally Diverse Practise (2020), Director's Choice.
