Chandramana Govindan Namboothiri was a prominent Kathakali artist from Kerala, India, born on February 15, 1935, in Chandramana Illam, Asamannoor, Kunnathunad taluk, Ernakulam district. He began his formal Kathakali training in 1947 under Kavunkal Chathunni Panikkar. After three years of study in Kerala, he continued his higher education at the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, accompanied by his primary mentor. He also received guidance from other luminaries such as Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Mankulam Vishnu Namboothiri. Namboothiri specialized in depicting "Pacha" (green-faced noble heroes), "Kathi" (anti-heroic warriors), and "Minukku" (subtle sage-like or female characters), establishing himself as a versatile actor capable of portraying a wide range of emotional depths. His performing career spanned decades, with performances in temples and Kathakali clubs. Beyond performing, he contributed to the art form through teaching at institutions like Sadanam, Kalamandalam, and the School of Drama of the University of Calicut. He also undertook research, notably receiving a Senior Fellowship for his work on 'Ilakiyattam'. Govindan Namboothiri traveled widely, performing in countries such as Italy, Poland, England, Finland, Qatar, Muscat, and Dubai.
