🪔 About

Shri Deepak Mazumdar is a highly respected figure in Indian classical dance, renowned as an exceptional performer, teacher, and choreographer, primarily in Bharatanatyam. Born on February 14, 1956, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, he received his foundational training in Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of Gurus Kanak Rele and T.S. Kadhirvelu Pillai at the Nalanda Nritya Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai. He furthered his academic pursuits by earning a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Mumbai. Mazumdar is celebrated for his profound artistic sensitivity, subtle abhinaya (expressive dance), and captivating stage presence. His scholarly approach provides deep insight into characters, enriching their expression. He demonstrates remarkable command over "taala" (rhythm) and has garnered critical acclaim for his "nritta" (pure dance) performances. As a versatile choreographer and nattuvanar, he has created numerous innovative pieces within the traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire, and his productions are lauded for their aesthetic presentation and novel approach. A dedicated guru, Mazumdar strongly upholds the "guru-shishya parampara" (teacher-disciple tradition), actively encouraging his students to perform and excel. He has guided over 25 young dancers through their Arangetrams (debut performances). He is the Founder Director of the Shiladhish Art and Research Institute in Mumbai, an institution dedicated to the arts. Throughout his extensive career, he has performed, conducted seminars, and led workshops at prestigious festivals both in India and internationally. His influence extends to prominent personalities like film actress Hema Malini, for whom he has choreographed for over two decades, and businesswoman Neeta Ambani, both of whom acknowledge him as their guru. He has also been the guru to actress Gracy Singh for 15 years.
