Guru Smt. Vijaya Marthanda is a distinguished veteran in Indian classical dance, specializing in Bharatanatyam and Kathak. With over four decades of experience, she is recognized as a professor, author, and scholar in the field. Her expertise encompasses both the theoretical and practical aspects of choreography and Natya Shastra. Driven by her passion for dance, she established Laya-Lasya, a renowned dance school located in Bengaluru, India. Prof. Marthanda is a fervent advocate for the study of dance theory, integrating it into practical performances through innovative themes and styles. This approach helps contemporary audiences appreciate India's rich cultural heritage. She has imparted her knowledge to thousands of students at leading institutions, including Reva, Jain, and Bangalore universities, as well as the Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography in India, and internationally at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, London. Beyond teaching, Guru Smt. Vijaya Marthanda is a prolific author of several dance textbooks and has published numerous papers at prominent dance summits. She is also an active member of the international dance council. Her significant contributions to Indian classical dance have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Singar Mani Award in 1980 and the Karnataka Kalashree award in 2014. A documentary on her achievements was produced by the Karnataka state government's information department.
