Natya Thilakam Sri Ganesan was a highly respected Malaysian Bharatanatyam guru, dancer, and teacher, renowned for his profound contributions to Indian classical dance. Born in Malaysia, he passed away at the age of 63 on June 9, 2023, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, after collapsing during the Devadasi dance festival, where he was scheduled to receive an award. Sri Ganesan's extensive training in Bharatanatyam took place in Madras (now Chennai), India, under the tutelage of Guru K. J. Sarasa of Saraslaya, from 1979 to 1987. He specialized in the intricate Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam, a tradition he would later propagate globally. In 1987, he established his own institution, Sri Ganesalaya, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which became a prominent school for Indian classical dance. Through Sri Ganesalaya, he dedicated his life to nurturing new talent, training thousands of students in Bharatanatyam, with reports indicating over 3,000 disciples. His teaching legacy extended internationally, with many of his students becoming accomplished dancers and teachers themselves, establishing schools in Malaysia, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and India. Throughout his illustrious career, Sri Ganesan produced over 350 dance shows, including elaborate dance dramas such as the Ramayana. His troupe, comprising 20 dancers, proudly represented Malaysia at the International Ramayana Dance Festival in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1991. He was recognized as an A-grade dancer by Doordarshan and served as the president of the Malaysia Bharatanatyam Dance Association. Sri Ganesan was a recipient of numerous international awards and a gold medallist at the All-India dance competition, underscoring his significant impact and artistic excellence in the field of Bharatanatyam.
