Hamsa Moily was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer and choreographer, primarily known for her expertise in Bharatanatyam. She received extensive training in both the Vazuvoor School and the Kalakshetra School of Bharatanatyam. Throughout her career, Hamsa Moily performed extensively in India and internationally, both as a soloist and as part of a group under the guidance of Padmini Ravi. Beyond performing, Hamsa Moily dedicated herself to sharing her dance experiences with children and actors, collaborating with organizations such as Gillo in Mumbai and The Kishkindi Trust in Anegundi, Hampi. Her choreographic works include "Sri Ramayana Mahanveshanam," based on her father M. Veerappa Moily's book, and "Bhavana," a Bharatanatyam dance/theatre production exploring the theme of adoption. She also choreographed for stage plays like "Kurukshetra se kargil tak" and "Bidaru Mandala," directed by M. S. Sathyu, and for Gillo's plays "Kyun-Kyun Ladki" and "She-He-Shey." Hamsa Moily also acted, directed, and choreographed "Chinta," a play in English. Her artistic endeavors extended to theatre, where she acted in productions such as "Agnipata," "Chitrapata Ramayana," "Smashana Kurukshetra," "The Vagina Monologues," and "Kamla." She also appeared in the Tamil period film "Shringaram," which focused on the lives of Devadasis, and a short film titled "A portrait of a dancer." Additionally, Hamsa Moily was an author, publishing a collection of poems called "The Homecoming" and a Hindi children's play titled "Kyun Kyun Ladki." Hamsa Moily passed away in Bengaluru on June 30, 2024, at the age of 46.
