Indira Kadambi is a distinguished Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, educator, and choreographer, widely recognized for her profound artistry and innovative approach to classical dance. Born in 1969 in the Udupi district of Karnataka, India, Kadambi commenced her Bharatanatyam training at the tender age of six under Sri Janardhan Sharma. She further honed her skills with Smt. Usha Datar, under whom she made her debut performance (arangetram) in 1988. Her advanced training included tutelage from Smt. Narmada and Smt. Savitri Jagannath Rao. A significant part of her artistic development involved studying abhinaya, the art of expression, under the legendary Padma Bhushan awardee Kalanidhi Narayanan. Kadambi also diversified her classical repertoire by training in Mohiniattam under Kalyanikutty Amma. Complementing her dance education, she studied Carnatic vocal music with Belakawadi Srinivasa Iyengar and nattuvangam (cymbals) with Kamala Rani of Kalakshetra. Active since the 1980s, Indira Kadambi has performed extensively across India and internationally, with appearances in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland, Austria, and Malaysia. She is an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India. Her career encompasses not only captivating performances but also numerous lecture demonstrations and workshops globally. As a sensitive and intelligent choreographer, Kadambi has created several solo dance productions, including "Koham – The Search," "Varsha Rithu," "Vamshi – The Divine Flute," "Hasya," and "Purusha Parinaam." In 1987, Indira Kadambi, alongside her husband Ramprasadh, co-founded the Ambalam Foundation, an institution dedicated to training in Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music. Demonstrating her pioneering spirit in dance education, she launched eAmbalam in 2011, an innovative online platform offering instruction in various Indian performing arts. Kadambi currently teaches students in Bangalore and specializes in imparting training in abhinaya and nattuvangam.
