🪔 About
Ipsita Mahapatra is an Odissi dancer and teacher based in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Born in the USA to Indian parents, she began her study of Odissi dance at the age of four. She trained rigorously from age four until eighteen under Guru Sangeeta Mohapatra Kar, who herself was a student of Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Mahapatra continued to study and dance with her guru while completing her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She commenced teaching Odissi dance in 2003 and continues to do so from her home in Madison, WI. In 2018, she re-entered formal study under various teachers within the parampara lineage of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, including Guru Poushali Mukherjee, Revital Carroll, Colleena Shakti, Kautavi Sarkar, Taissia Shpulnikova, Elena Catalano, Pallavi Basak, Rohan Dahle, Janhabi Behara, Guru Sujata Mohapatra, Guru Kum Kum Mohanty, and Guru Sharon Lowen. Mahapatra performs as both a solo artist and in group dances, exploring elements such as balance, ancient hand postures (mudras), rhythmic steps, eye movements, expressions, sacred geometry, breath, meditation, energetic control, emotion, and storytelling of mystical gods, goddesses, humanity, and nature in her performances and classes. She has been associated with the Utkalaa Center for Odissi Dance.
