J. Jayalalithaa (born Komalavalli on February 24, 1948, in Mysore) was a highly accomplished Indian classical dancer, renowned for her proficiency in multiple forms. Her mother, Sandhya, a trained classical musician and dancer, ensured Jayalalithaa received a strong foundation in the arts from a young age. Jayalalithaa began learning classical dance at age four, training in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri, and Kathak. Her primary Bharatanatyam guru was K. J. Sarasa, a pioneering female nattuvanar who established her dance school Sarasalaya in 1960. Jayalalithaa also received Kuchipudi training from Padma Bhushan Guru Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. She made her Bharatanatyam debut, known as an arangetram, at the Rasika Ranjani Sabha in Mylapore, Chennai, in May 1960. Her talent was evident, and she performed extensively across India. Her classical dance skills significantly contributed to her successful career as a leading film actress in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada cinema from 1961 to 1980. She was recognized for her versatility and classical dance abilities on screen. Later in her life, as a prominent political figure and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa remained a patron of classical arts. She supported initiatives to document dance history and provided land for the Bharata Ilango Foundation for Asian Culture. In recognition of her contributions and commitment to the arts, the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University was renamed The Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University in 2019. This government-backed institution, established in 2013, offers courses in various classical music and dance forms, including Bharatanatyam.
