Jayanti Ghosh was an Odissi dancer who played a significant role in the early revival and standardization of the Odissi classical dance form in India during the late 1950s. She was an active participant in the "Jayantika" association, an influential body formed by prominent gurus, intellectuals, dance researchers, and practitioners. The primary objective of Jayantika was to systematize the practice and teaching of Odissi, including defining its repertoire, technique, and dress code for future generations of dancers. Ghosh's performances were instrumental in showcasing Odissi during its crucial period of gaining classical recognition. She performed Odissi at the All India Dance Seminar organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Delhi in April 1958, a pivotal event for the dance form. Her performance at this seminar, which lasted approximately fifteen minutes, included an initial invocation, a concise version of a Pallavi in raga Kalyani, the song 'Dekhiba pora asare prana sangini,' and concluded with Mokshya. She also presented Odissi at the Nari Seva Sangh in Cuttack, where she performed mangalacharan, batu, basanta pallavi, Odia abhinaya, and mokshya as distinct items. On another occasion, she performed mangalacharan, batu, dekhiba para asare, and mokshya as a single, approximately 15-minute item. These performances were presented on behalf of Kala Vikash Kendra. Her involvement alongside pioneering figures such as Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra (who accompanied on mardala), Deba Prasad Das, and Mayadhar Raut underscores her importance in the resurgence and formalization of Odissi dance.
