Jibanjit Dutta, a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, was born on February 1, 1955, in Garamur Sattra, Majuli, Assam, India. He became one of the foremost exponents of Sattriya, an Indian classical dance form. Dutta received his foundational training in Sattriya Dance and Drama under the tutelage of the esteemed Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, Adhyapak Roseswar Saikia Borbayan. He further honed his skills with Nrityacharyee Jatin Goswami of Guwahati and explored other creative dance forms under Late Nabin Chandra Bora. Throughout his illustrious career, Jibanjit Dutta performed extensively across India, gracing numerous festivals in cities such as Jalandhar, New Delhi, Manipur, Kolkata, Arunachal Pradesh, Kohima, Kerala, Bangalore, and Mumbai. He was also a prolific choreographer, creating several notable dance compositions including Krishna Vandana, Guru Vandana, Vishnu Vandana, Ram Vandana, Sisu Lila, Abhimanyu Badh, Keli Gopal, Pakhua Nritya, Gopi Birah, Bagali Badh, Sita Haran, Parijat Haran, and Ajamil Upakhyan. Beyond his performance career, Dutta was deeply committed to teaching and propagating Sattriya dance. He established the Natan Sattriya Academy, where he imparted training to many aspiring talents. He also served as a regular trainer at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati and was a visiting lecturer at Dibrugarh University. His contributions extended to administrative roles, including being a member of the scholarship selecting committee of C.C.R.T. New Delhi, the Secretary of Sadou Asom Sattriya Sangeet Sikshak Samaj, and a member of Srimanta Sankardev Kristi Sangha, Garamur Sattra, Majuli. In 2015, he retired as an Assistant Producer from the Directorate of Information and Public Relation, Govt. of Assam. Jibanjit Dutta's profound dedication to Sattriya was recognized with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2016. He passed away on February 29, 2016, leaving behind a significant legacy that is carried forward by his son, Dr. Boris Dutta, also a Sattriya dancer.
