🪔 About
Jyotsna Jagannathan is a highly acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, recognized for her commitment, passion, and intelligent execution of the art form. Born in Chennai and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, her early exposure to Indian classical arts was minimal, but performances during holidays in Chennai left a lasting impression. She began her formal training in Nairobi under Hema Govindarajan after completing Class XII, where she also had her arangetram. Her dedication led her to pursue MBBS in India, specifically Chennai, to further her dance education. She continued her training under Jayanthi Subramaniam and later received extensive tutelage from A. Lakshmanaswamy (also known as A. Lakshman) for several years. She also learned repertoire pieces from Bragha Bessell. Currently, she is under the mentorship of the celebrated Bharatanatyam icon Malavika Sarukkai. Jagannathan has established herself as a prominent solo performer with a career spanning over 15 years, gracing prestigious festivals across India and internationally. Her international performances include tours to Singapore, Spain, Serbia, Kenya, and UAE. She has also toured with the Malavika Sarukkai Dance Ensemble for two years and traveled to Egypt, the UK, and the USA with Sarukkai's acclaimed group work, "Thari - the Loom." Her performances are noted for their neat rendition, finesse, style, agile and graceful movements, and intuitive sense of music, movement, and emotions. Critics have praised her complete dancing, sparkling nritta with excellent footwork, expressive interpretations, and the maturity she brings to her portrayals. She is an empanelled artist with the ICCR and a graded artist of Doordarshan.
