Jyotsna Shourie is an internationally celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and choreographer, with a career spanning over six decades. She began her journey in Bharatanatyam at the age of six, completing her formal training at the Sri Rajarajeshwari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir in Mumbai under the tutelage of Guru Sri Kalyanasunderam Pillai. Her arangetram, or solo debut, took place when she was ten years old, an event that led The Times of India to predict her emergence as a luminous star in the dance firmament. Shourie has also had the privilege of learning from other eminent gurus in Delhi and Chennai, including Guru Venkataraman, Guru Nana Kasar, Shri Krishna Kumar, and Shri Narsimhachari. Throughout her extensive career, Shourie has performed widely across India and internationally, serving as a cultural ambassador for Bharatanatyam. Her performances have graced stages in countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the Czech Republic, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Known for pushing the boundaries of classical dance, Shourie has conceived and choreographed numerous critically acclaimed dance productions. These works often blend traditional Bharatanatyam with contemporary themes and incorporate diverse elements like audio-visual media, carols, gospel singing, bhajans, Chinese modern dance, and even tap dancing. In 1990, she established The Dance Centre in Delhi, a learning institution dedicated to nurturing the skills and values of Bharatanatyam. Further expanding her contributions to the arts, Shourie founded The Divinity Series, a festival of dance and music, and 'Learning From the Masters,' a workshop series for aspiring dancers, both in 2014. She is also the founder of the Jyotsna Shourie Dance Company and co-founded the Keelaka Dance Company in Delhi with her student Aneesha Grover, aiming to make Bharatanatyam relevant to a wider audience through innovative storytelling and fusion with other art forms like Kathak and Chau.
