🪔 About
Kalamandalam K.G. Vasudevan Nair, a renowned Kathakali maestro, was born in 1937 in Keerikkat village, Kerala, India. His journey into the world of Kathakali began at the tender age of 11, under the tutelage of Evoor Raghavan Pillai, with whom he trained for four years. At 14, he joined the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam, where his talents were further honed under the eminent guidance of masters like Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair and Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair. Vasudevan Nair specialized in the Kalluvazhi style of Kathakali, a traditional form of Indian classical dance native to Kerala. He gained significant acclaim for his portrayals in both 'Pacha' (virtuous characters) and 'Kathi' (anti-heroic characters) veshams. Among his countless memorable roles are Rugmangada, Nala, Bahuka, Krishna, Keechaka, and Ravana. He was also celebrated for his captivating female portrayals, including Urvashi in 'Kalakeyavadham', Lalitha in 'Narakasuravadham', Damayanti in 'Nalacharitam', and Mohini in 'Rugmangada Charitam'. His brilliant performances and insightful lecture-demonstrations have inspired audiences across different nations, taking them through the detailed nuances of this intricate art form. Even in his seventies, Vasudevan Nair continued to perform with remarkable finesse and brilliance, demonstrating a life entirely dedicated to Kathakali. He has also served as a guru, imparting his knowledge and skill to several acclaimed artists, including Sadanam Krishnan Kutty and Sadanam Balakrishnan. Awards & Honours: Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2010).
