Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair (April 7, 1914 – August 15, 1990) was a pioneering Indian Kathakali artist from Kerala, renowned for his masterful and emotionally expressive interpretations of heroic and anti-heroic roles. Born in Cheruthazham, near Payyannur in the Kannur district, he began his Kathakali training at the age of 13 under Guru Chandu Panikkar. At 19, he joined Kerala Kalamandalam, where he received rigorous training from masters such as Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon, Thakazhi Kunju Kurup, Kavalappara Narayanan Nair, and Mani Madhava Chakyar, who specifically imparted techniques in eye movements and *satvika abhinaya* (naturalistic expression). By 1940, Krishnan Nair became an assistant teacher at Kerala Kalamandalam. He later served as a main teacher at institutions including Margi Kathakali Vidyalayam in Thiruvananthapuram and the R.L.V. Institute of Fine Arts in Tripunithura, Ernakulam district. He performed extensively until his mid-70s, excelling in roles such as Nala in *Nala Charitam*, Ravana in *Bali Vijayam*, Bheema in *Duryodhana Vadham*, and Rugmangada in *Rukmini Swayamvaram*. His innovative approach emphasized psychological depth and audience connection, leading him to author an *aattaprakaram* (performance manual) for *Nala Charitam*. In 1975, he trained the Tripunithura Kathakali Kendram Ladies Troupe, a women's Kathakali group that achieved national recognition. Krishnan Nair was married to Mohiniyattam exponent Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma, and his daughters, Sreedevi Rajan and Kala Vijayan, are also professionals in Mohiniyattam, as is his granddaughter Smitha Rajan.
