🪔 About
Vadakke Manalath Govindan Nair, popularly known as Kalamandalam Gopi, is an acclaimed Indian classical dancer and master exponent of Kathakali, born on May 21, 1937, in Kothachira village, Palakkad district, Kerala, India. He initially trained in Ottanthullal before transitioning to Kathakali in 1951 at the Kerala Kalamandalam in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur, at the age of 14. His rigorous training at Kalamandalam, which lasted seven years, was under renowned gurus including Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair, Thekkinkattil Ravunni Nair, Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair, Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Warrier, and Vazhenkada Kunju Nair. He graduated in 1957 and was immediately appointed as a junior teacher at the institution, a position given by its founder, Vallathol Narayana Menon. He rose through the ranks, becoming principal by 1990 and retiring from the role in 1992, though he continued performing internationally and mentoring students as an emeritus professor. Gopi is renowned for his mastery of 'pacha' (green-faced) roles, portraying virtuous heroes such as Nala, Arjuna, and Bhima, and is also adept at 'kathi' (villainous) roles like Ravana and Keechaka. He innovated by incorporating 'lokadharmi' (naturalistic) elements into the stylized 'natyadharmi' tradition of Kathakali, blending the Kalluvazhi and southern schools to enhance expressiveness. His contributions extend to pedagogy, having trained multiple generations of Kathakali students, and he authored the 400-page actor's manual, "Nalacharita Prabhavam," published in 2017. He currently resides in Mundoor, Thrissur. Awards & Honours: Kerala Kalamandalam Award (1985), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1987), Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (1995), Kerala Kalamandalam Fellowship (2002), Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship (2007), Padma Shri (2009), Kalidasa Samman (2011), Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna) (2011), Sangeetha Kala Vibhushan (Shanmukhananda Sabha) (2025), Natya Shiromani.
