Vadakke Manalath Govindan Nair, popularly known as Kalamandalam Gopi, is a revered Indian classical dancer and an eminent exponent of Kathakali. Born on May 25, 1937, in Kothachira village, Palakkad district, Kerala, Gopi initially trained in Ottanthullal before discovering Kathakali, which transformed his life. He joined the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur, in 1951, where he underwent rigorous training under stalwarts such as Thekkinkattil Ravunni Nair, Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair, Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, Krishnan Kutty Warrier, and Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair. After completing his formal lessons in 1957, Gopi was appointed as a teacher at Kerala Kalamandalam by its founder, poet laureate Vallathol Narayana Menon. He dedicated over three decades to the institution, eventually serving as its Principal before retiring in 1992. Even after retirement, he returned to his alma mater as a professor emeritus, continuing to shape future generations of Kathakali artists. Kalamandalam Gopi is celebrated for his majestic and romantic portrayal of virtuous 'pacha' roles, including characters like Nalan, Karnan, and Rukmangadan, and is also highly regarded for his yellow-faced 'pazhukka' roles. He is known for blending the stylized 'Natyadharmi' elements of Kathakali with 'Lokadharmi' or non-stylized components, bringing a unique depth to his performances. His contributions have been pivotal in revitalizing the art form, and he is widely considered an icon and a living legend of Kathakali. He authored "Nalacharita Prabhavam," an actor's manual, published in 2017.
