Kalamandalam Hari R. Nair was a renowned Indian classical Kathakali artist, celebrated for his powerful portrayals of various characters. Born in Korani near Attingal in the Thiruvananthapuram district, he completed his Kathakali training at Kerala Kalamandalam, a prominent institution for performing arts. He became a senior faculty member at Kerala Kalamandalam and was appointed as a permanent instructor there in 2019. Hari R. Nair was particularly acclaimed for his mastery of "Thadi vesham" (red beard devilish characters) and "Kattala Veshams" (forest hunter roles). His notable portrayals included characters such as Dussasana, Bali, Sugreeva, Jarasandha, and Parasurama. He performed alongside many stalwarts of Kathakali and toured numerous countries, showcasing his artistry internationally. Beyond his performances, he was instrumental in establishing Kathakali classes at the International Centre for Performing Arts (ICPA) in Bangalore. His innovative work extended to contemporary adaptations, with his portrayal of the 'Shark' in a Kathakali version of Ernest Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea" earning him the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award. Kalamandalam Hari R. Nair passed away at the age of 48 on May 26, 2023, at his residence in Panjal near Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur district. He is survived by his wife, Anjali, and sons, Ajan Hari and Alok Hari. His untimely demise was widely mourned by the Kathakali fraternity and art lovers.
