Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair (1916-2000) was a pioneering Kathakali artiste from Kerala, South India, renowned for bringing prominence to female characters in the classical dance-drama. Born in Kudamaloor village of Kottayam district in 1916, he was affectionately known simply as "Kudamaloor" by his place of birth. His professional career coincided with that of the legendary Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, with Kudamaloor often playing the ideal heroine opposite Krishnan Nair's protagonists. Karunakaran Nair's training in Kathakali began under Guru Kurichi Rama Panikkar. He pursued higher studies with Kurichi Kunhan Panikkar, Thottam Sankaran Namboodiri, and the Kochappi-Raman brothers. He further honed his skills in the northern school of Kathakali under Kavalappara Narayanan Nair. He joined the main troupe of the Travancore palace in 1939, serving as a court artist for 39 years. His arangetram (debut) took place in 1925 at the age of ten, performing the role of Rukmini in Rukmini Swayamvaram. Kudamaloor excelled in a wide array of female roles, including Damayanti, Lalita, Kunti, Mohini, Rukmini, Devayani, Sairandhri, and Draupadi, captivating audiences with his charming face and graceful feminine movements. He also performed male roles such as Kuchelan in Kuchelavrittam and Naradan in Balivijayam. Beyond performing, Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair was a dedicated teacher and institution head. He served as a tutor at the FACT Kathakali School near Kochi and later became the chief teacher and principal of the Kudamaloor Kala Kendram, an institution established in his honor in 1978. He also directed the Satsangam International Centre for Art and Culture. He toured extensively, performing across America and Europe until the age of 86. Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair passed away on October 17, 2000. His significant contributions to Kathakali, particularly in elevating female roles, established him as a forerunner to artists like Kottakkal Sivaraman.
