Kalamandalam Krishnakumar, born on January 2, 1962, in Thrissur district, Kerala, is a distinguished Indian classical dancer primarily recognized for his mastery in Kathakali. His parents are Ambadath Achuthan Nair and Manickath Gauri Amma. Krishnakumar embarked on his artistic journey at a young age, joining Kerala Kalamandalam in 1974 when he was 11. He underwent rigorous training in Kathakali, earning a six-year diploma and receiving two years of special training with a scholarship from the Department of Culture, Government of India. His Kathakali gurus include eminent figures such as Kalamandalam Raman Kutty Nair, Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair, Kalamandalam Gopi, Vazhenkada Vijayan, and Madavoor Vasudevan Nair. He also pursued a two-year training in Bharatanatyam at Kalakshetra, Adyar, Madras (now Chennai), where he also served as a teacher early in his career. Krishnakumar became a professional Kathakali artist in 1984. After 13 years of intensive training, he made his stage debut as Krishna in Rukmini Swayamvaram. His career saw him portray a diverse range of characters, from heroic and virtuous roles like King Nala, Arjuna, Krishna, and Bhima, to powerful antagonists such as Ravana, Duryodhana, Narakasura, and Keechaka. He has performed extensively across India and internationally, including in the USA, Canada, UK, USSR, Mauritius, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Iran, France, Italy, Thailand, and Taiwan. In 1990, Krishnakumar joined Kerala Kalamandalam as a senior instructor in the Kathakali vesham department, eventually heading the department. He taught there for nearly three decades until his retirement in 2018, influencing a large number of disciples. His contributions to Kathakali have been widely recognized with several accolades, including the Kummini Award from Kerala Kalamandalam and the Kochaniyan Award from the Kathakali Club Tripunithura. He received the Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2023 and was selected for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2025.
