🪔 About

Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, born on April 7, 1914, in Cheruthazham, Kannur district, Kerala, India, emerged as a pioneering and legendary figure in Kathakali. His journey in the classical dance-drama began at the age of 13, receiving initial training under Guru Chandu Panickar. In 1930, at the age of 16, he joined the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam after being recognized by its founder, poet Vallathol Narayana Menon. There, he underwent rigorous instruction from eminent gurus including Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon, Thakazhi Kunju Kurup, Kavalappara Narayanan Nair, and notably, Kudiyattam maestro Mani Madhava Chakyar, from whom he honed his skills in intricate eye movements and *rasa-abhinaya* (emotional expression). By 1940, Krishnan Nair had become an assistant teacher at Kerala Kalamandalam. However, in the early forties, he transitioned to a highly successful freelance career, quickly becoming one of Kathakali's most popular artists. He was celebrated for his expressive face, elegant stage presence, and a unique romantic-humorous approach to characters, excelling in emotionally charged roles such as Nala in *Nala Charitam*, Ravana in *Bali Vijayam*, Bheema in *Duryodhana Vadham*, and Rugmangada. His performances were lauded for blending stylized and realistic acting, emphasizing psychological depth and audience connection, earning him the moniker "Mozart of Kathakali." Beyond performing, Krishnan Nair dedicated himself to teaching. He served as the Principal Instructor of Kathakali at the RLV School of Fine Arts in Tripunithura from 1974 through the 1980s. A significant contribution was his role in 1975, training the Tripunithura Kathakali Kendram Ladies Troupe, thereby challenging centuries-old traditions that restricted Kathakali to male performers and promoting greater gender inclusivity. He also co-founded "Kalyani Krishna Fine Arts Academy- Kerala Kalalayam" in 1952 with Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma. He authored his autobiography, "Ente Jeevitham: Arangilum Aniyarayilum" (My Life: On Stage and Off), published posthumously in 1991, offering insights into his life and the art form. Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair passed away on August 15, 1990, at the age of 76, leaving an indelible mark on Kathakali. Awards & Honours: Padma Shri (1970), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1967), Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (1969), Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship (1977), Kerala Kalamandalam Fellowship (1984), Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture.
