🪔 About

Kalamandalam Prabhakaran, born on October 2, 1945, in Cheruvathoor village near Payyanur in Kerala's Kasaragod district, is an acclaimed Indian classical performer and guru specializing in Thullal, a satirical dance-drama tradition. Inspired by his paternal uncle Malabar Raman Nair, he began his formal training in Thullal at the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam in 1960. He underwent rigorous four-year training under esteemed gurus Vaikom Divakaran Nair and Vadakkan Kannan Nair, mastering the form's texts, steps, rhythms, diction, and singing styles. Prabhakaran made his debut performance in 1962 and completed his diploma in Thullal in 1964. Beyond Thullal, he also mastered basic lessons in Bharatanatyam under Natanam Sivapal. In the late 1970s, he further refined Parayanthullal under Vechoor Thankamani Pillai, reinventing it through self-practice and collaborations to stage narratives like Pulindimoksham. Prabhakaran is recognized for his innovative choreography and for pioneering "Thullal Thrayam," an experiment combining the three traditional Thullal genres: Ottanthullal, Seethankanthullal, and Parayanthullal. He has been instrumental in preserving and revitalizing Thullal, earning the moniker "Dronacharya" for his mentorship. He has trained hundreds of disciples over three decades, many of whom have excelled in state-level festivals. Prabhakaran has held a prominent, long-term role at Kerala Kalamandalam, fostering the preservation and evolution of the art form through dedicated teaching. Awards & Honours: Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (1996), Kalasagar award for Ottanthullal (2021), Thakazhi Kunjukurup Fellowship (2025).
