Kalamandalam Rama Chakyar, born in 1950 in Painkulam village, Thrissur district, Kerala, India, is a highly esteemed exponent of Koodiyattam and Koothu, traditional Sanskrit theatre forms from Kerala. His lineage is deeply rooted in these art forms; his father, Ammannoor Parameswara Chakyar, was a renowned scholar of "Kramadeepika" and "Attaprakaram." Rama Chakyar began his intensive training in Koodiyattam at the age of twelve under his maternal grand uncle, the legendary Painkulam Rama Chakyar. When his uncle joined Kerala Kalamandalam in 1965, Rama Chakyar continued his studies there, mastering the intricate techniques of the four-fold concept of abhinaya. Throughout his distinguished career, Kalamandalam Rama Chakyar has established himself as a leading performer and a most sought-after teacher of Koodiyattam. He served as the Chairman of the Koodiyattam department at Kerala Kalamandalam and currently holds the position of a visiting professor at the institution. He is celebrated for his compelling portrayals in various roles, including Vidushaka and Athreya, as well as Kaundinya in 'Subhadradhananjayam,' Saandilya in 'Bhagavaddajjukam,' Soorpanakha in 'Soorpanakhangam,' and Jatayu in 'Jatayuvadham.' Rama Chakyar has been instrumental in elevating these classical art forms to international recognition, performing at major festivals both within India and abroad. He is known for his dedication to the art and his efforts in training the next generation of artists, including being the first to train a student for a youth festival and teaching Koodiyattam to international students. His contributions have earned him significant accolades, solidifying his status as an unparalleled presence in the cultural landscape of Kerala and beyond.
