Kalamandalam Raman Namboothiri, born on August 19, 1951, is a distinguished Indian classical musician renowned for his mastery of the Chenda, a traditional percussion instrument integral to Kathakali performances. His journey in the world of classical arts began after his primary education, when he dedicated six and a half years to intensive training in Chenda. He honed his skills under the guidance of esteemed gurus Pallassana Chandra Mannadiyar and Kalamandalam Achunni Poduval. Throughout his career, Namboothiri has been a prominent figure in Kathakali ensembles, participating in numerous performances across India. His artistry has also taken him to international stages, where he has represented Indian classical music in countries such as Sweden, Japan, Thailand, Tunisia, Germany, England, and Sri Lanka, contributing to the global appreciation of Kathakali. Beyond his performance career, Kalamandalam Raman Namboothiri is a dedicated educator. He currently serves as a Chenda Teacher at the R.L.V Music College in Thripunithura, Kerala, where he imparts his extensive knowledge and expertise to the next generation of Kathakali percussionists. His significant contributions to the art form have been recognized with several prestigious accolades, including the Kottarakkara Thampuran Award, the M.S. Namboothiri Smaraka award, the Thirunakkara Devaswom Award, and the Moovattupuzha Kathakali Club Award.
