🪔 About

Kalamandalam Saraswathy is a highly esteemed Indian classical dancer and guru from Kerala, renowned for her mastery of Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kuchipudi. Born Saraswathi in Kuzhalmannam village, Palakkad district, Kerala, she later moved to Kozhikode, which became her primary city of activity. Her profound journey in dance began when she joined Kerala Kalamandalam in 1960, graduating as a rank-holding student in 1964. Saraswathy received extensive training from several eminent gurus. In Mohiniyattam, she was tutored by Thottassery Chinnammu Amma, Kalamandalam Sathyabhama, and Smt. Kalyanikutty Amma. For Bharatanatyam, her teachers included Guru Sri. Bhaskara Rao, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, Smt. Chitra Visweswaran, Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, Swamimalai S.K. Rajaratnam Pillai, and Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan. She further honed her skills in Kuchipudi under Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. Throughout her career, Kalamandalam Saraswathy has performed extensively across India and internationally. She notably led Mohiniyattam presentations in the North Eastern states of India and West Bengal as part of a Cultural Exchange Programme during 1991-92. In 1972, she established her own dance institution, "Nrityalaya," in Kozhikode, a name suggested by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. Over the past three decades, she has emerged as an exceptional guru, mentoring hundreds of students in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Mohiniyattam. Her teaching legacy is continued by her daughter, Aswathy Nair, and son-in-law, Srikanth, who are also accomplished dancers and run Nrityalaya, extending its reach to students in the USA. Saraswathy is married to the acclaimed Malayalam writer M. T. Vasudevan Nair, whom she wed in 1977. Her contributions to classical dance have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1983 for Bharatanatyam and the Swaralaya Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair Award in 2022 for her overall contribution to classical dance forms. She is widely regarded as an institution in herself and a leading figure in Kerala's classical dance scene. Awards & Honours: Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (1983), Rotary Award for Professional Excellence (2000), Swaralaya Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair Award (2022), Nrithya-Natya award, Kalamandalam Award, Kala Tharpanam Natya Shri Award.
