Kalanilayam Rajasekharan is a distinguished Kathakali artist, born on April 24, 1963, to Parameswara Panickar and Chinnamma. His profound journey into the world of Kathakali commenced after his SSLC, leading him to the esteemed Unnayi Varrier Smaraka Kalanilayam. Here, he underwent an intensive and comprehensive training regimen from 1978 to 1988. This decade-long dedication culminated in him earning a six-year Diploma in Kathakali 'Vesham' (costume and role-playing) and a subsequent two-year Post Diploma. Further enhancing his artistic development, he was also a recipient of a two-year Central Government Scholarship, which allowed him to delve deeper into the nuances of this intricate art form. During his foundational years, Rajasekharan had the invaluable opportunity to learn from several revered gurus, including Pallippuram Gopalan Nair, Kalamandalam Kuttan, Kalanilayam Raghavan, and Kalanilayam Gopalakrishnan. This rich lineage of teachers provided him with a diverse understanding and mastery of various Kathakali character types, known as 'veshams'. He is particularly acclaimed for his expertise in portraying a wide array of these characters, which include "Pacha" (the green-hued noble and heroic characters), "Kathi" (the knife-marked anti-heroes, often arrogant and powerful), "Vellathadi" (the white-bearded characters, representing divine or superior beings), "Kari" (the black-faced demonic or tribal figures), and "Hamsam" (the graceful swan-like characters). Each of these roles demands distinct facial expressions, elaborate makeup, and specific body language, showcasing Rajasekharan's versatility and deep understanding of Kathakali aesthetics. Throughout his career, Kalanilayam Rajasekharan has graced numerous stages across Kerala, captivating audiences with his powerful and expressive Kathakali performances. A notable highlight in his performing career was his participation in the Asiad in 1982, an international sporting event that also featured cultural showcases, providing him with a significant platform. His dedication and artistic merit have been recognized with accolades, most notably the prestigious Pallipuram Gopalan Nair Award.
