🪔 About

Guru Smt. Kalyani Shekar is a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer and guru, whose illustrious career as a teacher spans over fifty eventful years. Hailing from a family of Bharatanatyam artists, she is the niece of the esteemed Guru Padmashree Dandayudapanipillai. Shekar commenced her Bharatanatyam training at an early age under the tutelage of her uncle, meticulously imbibing the intricate nuances and distinctive features of his celebrated style. Her journey as a teacher began at NATYAKALALAYAM in Chennai, her mentor's school, where she also performed. Subsequently, she taught independently in Jamshedpur before establishing her own dance institution, Bharatnatya Kalalyam, in New Delhi approximately forty years ago (as of 2016). Kalyani Shekar is recognized today as an authentic exponent of the Dandayudapanipillai School of Bharatanatyam. Throughout her career, she has choreographed and staged significant dance dramas, including “Chitrambala Kuravanji” in 1993 and “Silapaddikaram” in 1994. She is particularly noted for her selfless and devoted approach to teaching, fostering the growth and learning of her numerous students, and actively promoting their prosperity in the field of Bharatanatyam. Awards & Honours: CRITIC CIRCLE OF INDIA ANNUAL AWARD (1993).
