🪔 About
Kamal Haasan, a prominent Indian actor and filmmaker, is also a classically trained dancer with a diverse background in various Indian classical dance forms. His journey into dance began at the age of twelve when he started training in Bharatanatyam. He developed a keen interest in Kuchipudi after attending a recital, which further fueled his desire to learn dance. Haasan received initial training in Bharatanatyam from M.S. Natarajan, who followed the Pandanallur bani style. His classical dance education expanded to include Kuchipudi under the tutelage of Guru Nataraja Ramakrishna, and Kathak from a teacher named Kulkarni. He also incorporated elements of Kathakali, having trained under and served as an assistant choreographer to the legendary Thangappan Master. Haasan's extensive classical dance training has significantly influenced his acting career, allowing him to integrate dance as a powerful tool for character expression and storytelling in his films. He showcased his mastery in various cinematic works, notably in the 1983 National Award-winning film *Sagara Sangamam*, where he portrayed a classical dancer. Other films like *Nizhal Nijamaagiradhu*, *Punnagai Mannan*, and *Vishwaroopam* also feature his classical dance performances. For *Vishwaroopam*, he further honed his Kathak skills under the guidance of the renowned Pandit Birju Maharaj. While celebrated for his versatility and contributions to cinema, his primary role has been as an actor and filmmaker, rather than a guru or legend solely within the classical dance tradition.
