Kumari Kamala, also known as Kamala Lakshman and Kamala Lakshmi Narayanan, was a legendary Indian classical dancer, actress, choreographer, and guru, widely recognized as a pioneering exponent of Bharatanatyam in the Vazhuvoor style. Born on June 16, 1934, in Mayuram (now Mayiladuthurai), Tamil Nadu, India, Kamala began her dance training at an exceptionally young age. She initially received lessons in Kathak from Lachhu Maharaj in Bombay and Hindustani classical music from Shankar Rao Vyas. Her prodigious talent was discovered at age four by Tamil film director A.N. Kalyanasundaram Iyer, leading to early film roles as "Baby Kamala" in the late 1930s and 1940s. During World War II, her family moved to Madras (Chennai), where she began formal training in Bharatanatyam. She first studied under Kattumannarkoil Muthukumara Pillai, and later became the prime disciple of the renowned Vazhuvoor B. Ramaiyah Pillai, under whom she mastered the Vazhuvoor bani, a style celebrated for its grace, finesse, and expressive abhinaya. Kamala's captivating performances, marked by technical precision and emotive depth, helped popularize Bharatanatyam among the masses, both on stage and through her appearances in nearly 100 films across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada languages. She performed for dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and toured internationally in the late 1950s, becoming an early global ambassador for Bharatanatyam. In 1975, she was awarded the Branta Professorship at Colgate University, where she taught dance. In 1980, Kamala moved to New York City and established her dance school, Shri Bharatha Kamalalaya, in Long Island, dedicating herself to teaching and propagating the Vazhuvoor tradition to new generations. She passed away in California on November 23, 2025, at the age of 91.
