Kanan Bhatt is a highly acclaimed figure in Indian classical dance, renowned as a Bharatanatyam teacher, choreographer, and institution head. Her extensive career in dance spans over three decades, during which she has significantly contributed to the preservation and promotion of Indian classical arts. Bhatt received her formal training in Bharatanatyam, earning a Bharat Natyam Alankar (M.A. in Dance) from Gandharva Mahavidyalay in Amdavad, India. Further solidifying her expertise, she also holds a Nritya Kovid from the Nalanda Dance Research Centre in Mumbai, India. Throughout her illustrious career, Kanan Bhatt has graced numerous stages, performing both as a solo artist and with her troupe in major cities across India and North America. Her passion for dance and dedication to cultural preservation led her to establish Nritya Kala Mandir, an institution dedicated to Indian classical dance. The academy was first founded in Amdavad, India, in 1987, realizing her dream of making ethnic dance accessible to individuals with a keen interest in the art form. Recognizing the growing diaspora and the need to foster cultural roots abroad, she expanded her vision by establishing a branch of Nritya Kala Mandir in Toronto, Canada, in 2001. As the Founder Director of Nritya Kala Mandir, Kanan Bhatt has been instrumental in mentoring countless dance enthusiasts in Bharatanatyam. Her teaching legacy is profound, with over 100 students successfully completing their Arangetral (debut performance) under her expert tutelage in Canada, India, and the U.S.A. The Nritya Kala Mandir in Toronto offers a comprehensive seven-year training program in Bharatanatyam, culminating in an Arangetram performance, and also provides advanced post-Arangetram courses. Beyond Bharatanatyam, the academy also offers training in Indian Folk and Classical Fusion dance styles. Kanan Bhatt's unwavering commitment to nurturing the younger generation and promoting Indian ethnic art and culture through dance has earned her numerous awards and certificates. She continues to be a guiding force, inspiring students to embrace the beauty, discipline, and devotion inherent in Bharatanatyam.
