Kanhai Lal Maharana, a distinguished figure in Indian classical arts, was born in 1933 in Seraikella, India. Hailing from a family of traditional goldsmiths in Puri, Maharana dedicated his life to the intricate art of mask-making for Seraikella Chhau, a classical dance form. He received his specialized training from renowned mask-makers of Seraikella, including the legendary Shilpakushal Prasanna Kumar Mohapatra and Maharaja Aditya Pratap Singh Deo. Throughout his illustrious career, Maharana worked in close association with the Government Centre for Seraikella Chhau Dance, an institution established in 1960. His masks are celebrated for their exquisite refinement and profound symbolic character, bringing to life various roles in Chhau performances. Notable among his creations are masks for characters such as Shakuntala, Dushyanta, Nala, Damayanti, Urvashi, and Durvasa, which are lauded for their artistic merit and theatrical appeal. Kanhai Lal Maharana's contributions extended beyond creation; he actively promoted and preserved this traditional art form. He conducted numerous workshops on mask-making, including at the Kalidas Academy of Madhya Pradesh, and participated in significant events like the All India Art Conference held in Delhi. He was also instrumental in imparting his traditional knowledge and skills, providing training to talented young craftsmen in his region, thereby ensuring the continuity of this unique heritage. His exceptional dedication and mastery were recognized with several accolades. In 2004, he received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his invaluable contribution to the mask-making tradition in Seraikella Chhau dance, which is the highest Indian recognition in the performing arts. He was also honored with the Award of the Ministry of Development of Bihar and the Best Artist Award of the Maharaja Puma Chandra College of Baripada.
