🪔 About
Kanya Ramachandran, also known as Kanya Ramachandran Tayalia, is an accomplished Bharatanatyam artist, teacher, and choreographer. She is the daughter and a prominent disciple of the renowned Bharatanatyam guru Padmini Ramachandran, and has dedicated her life to perpetuating the legacy of her mother's institution, Natyapriya. Kanya began her formal training in Bharatanatyam at a young age, having her arangetram (debut performance) at ten under the tutelage of Guru S. K. Kameshwaran and her mother, Guru Smt. Padmini Ramachandran. Throughout her career, Kanya Ramachandran has performed extensively across India, gracing prestigious stages at venues such as the Music Academy in Chennai, the Nishagandi and Surya festivals in Kerala, the Dover Lane festival in Kolkata, and the NCPA and ICCR in Delhi and Mumbai. She holds the distinction of being the youngest dancer to perform at the SAARC convention held in Bangalore. Her talent has also taken her internationally, with performances sponsored by the Government of Karnataka at Singapore Fine Arts, and appearances in the UK, France, Germany, USA, and the Middle East, where she has garnered critical acclaim. Beyond performing, Kanya is a dedicated educator and choreographer. She runs the Natya Priya dance school, continuing the work of the institution founded by her mother in 1974. Within an eight-year period, she has successfully guided over 15 students through their arangetrams in Bangalore, Chennai, and Gujarat. Her choreographic style is noted for its versatility and innovative approach to classical formats, while maintaining the art form's original essence. Kanya also ventured into visual media, acting in "Himashweta," an acclaimed Kannada dance serial, and making a cameo appearance as a dance teacher in the Oscar-winning film "Life of Pi." She holds an MBA in Marketing from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
