Pt. Kartik Ram, a distinguished Kathak dancer, was a prominent figure of the Raigarh Gharana. Born on October 15, 1910, he initially began his artistic journey as a 'Gammat Nacha' folk dancer. He later received extensive training in Kathak from esteemed gurus, including Pt. Jayalal Maharaj ji and Pt. Achchan Maharaj Ji. Pt. Kartik Ram, along with Guru Pt. Kalyan Das Mahant Ji, formed the renowned "Kartik - Kalyan" duo, which gained significant popularity across India, performing in various royal courts and stages. His exceptional talent in Kathak was recognized with the 'Shikhar Samman' by the Government of Madhya Pradesh for the years 1980-81. Further acknowledging his contributions to Indian classical dance, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1982. Beyond his performances, Pt. Kartik Ram was also dedicated to teaching. He served as a Kathak dance teacher at institutions such as Khairagarh and the Chakradhar Nritya Kendra in Bhopal. His legacy is rooted in the Raigarh Gharana, where he was considered one of its most cherished artists. Awards & Honours: Shikhar Samman, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1982).
