🪔 About

Katrina Rute is a versatile Indian classical dancer, originally from Latvia and currently based in the United Kingdom. She is trained in multiple Indian classical dance styles, including Kathak (Jaipur gharana), Bharatanatyam (Kalakshetra style), and Odissi (Kelucharan Mohapatra's gharana). Rute began her Odissi training in Sweden with Anette Pooja, learning the foundational elements of the dance form. She furthered her studies in London under the tutelage of Swapnokalpa Dasgupta and Urbi Basu at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, where she successfully completed her Odissi diploma exams with distinction. Her training also includes a course at the Odissi Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar, India, and participation in workshops led by esteemed gurus such as Sujata Mohapatra, Poushali Mukherjee, Madhavi Mudgal, and Ileana Citaristi. With a strong theoretical foundation in Indian classical dance, evidenced by her bachelor's and master's research papers on various topics within the field, Rute brings a comprehensive understanding to her practice and teaching. She has been actively teaching dance for nearly two decades, catering to diverse age groups. Currently, she serves as an Odissi teacher at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in London, an institution where the Odissi faculty has flourished under her guidance. Rute is an accomplished performer, having graced numerous national and international cultural events and television shows across the UK, Latvia, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, and Russia. Her notable performance venues include the British Museum, Southbank Centre (including the Alchemy Festival and Royal Festival Hall), The House of Commons, and The House of Lords. She has also performed at significant events such as Diwali and Ratha Yatra celebrations on Trafalgar Square and the Indian Prime Minister's welcoming ceremony at Wembley Stadium. Rute views Indian classical dance as a holistic path for growth, integrating physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of training.
