🪔 About
Kavalappara Narayanan Nair (1882–1948) was a highly esteemed 20th-century Kathakali artiste and tutor from Kerala, South India. A native of Kavalappara, east of Shoranur in Palakkad district, he received his primary training under Guru Puthenveettil Sekhara Menon at the local Kaliyogam (Kathakali school) associated with the Kavalappara palace. Narayanan Nair gained significant fame for his specialization in the white-beard (vella thaadi) roles, particularly that of the monkey-god Hanuman. His portrayal of Hanuman was so impactful that it inspired the renowned Malayalam poet Edasseri Govindan Nair to compose a poem titled "Lavanasuravadhathile Hanuman." Beyond Hanuman, he demonstrated versatility across a wide range of characters, excelling in virtuous roles like Bahukan and Brihannala, anti-hero figures such as Shishupalan and Keechakan, grotesque characters like Raudra Bhiman, and even minor roles including Mannaan, Aanakkaran, Narasimham, Bheeru, and Yavanan. He was a contemporary of other Kathakali stalwarts like Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon and Guru Kunchu Kurup. Notably, Narayanan Nair was the only Kathakali artiste from northern Kerala to be on the regular payrolls of the royal palace in Thiruvananthapuram. As an instructor, he contributed to leading performing arts institutes such as Kerala Kalamandalam, PSV Natyasangham in Kottakkal, and Kadathanattu Kaliyogam. His contributions extended to developing stylized training techniques and notation systems for sub-minor roles, which helped standardize character-acting patterns. He also played a role in the early documentation and global dissemination of Kathakali by imparting foundational knowledge of its 24 basic hand gestures to early Western scholars.
