Kavungal Chathunni Panicker (1922-2007) was a distinguished Indian classical dancer, celebrated for his profound proficiency in Kathakali, the traditional dance form of Kerala. Born in 1922 in Thichur, a small hamlet near Vadakkancherry in the Thrissur district of Kerala, he hailed from the illustrious Kavungal family, known for six generations of Kathakali artistes. Panicker began his Kathakali training at the age of eleven in 1933, under the tutelage of his uncle, Sankara Panicker, for three years, and later continued his studies with Katambur Gopalan Nair. His debut performance took place in 1936 when he was 14 years old. By the age of 20, Panicker had formed his own Kathakali troupe. In 1947, he joined the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad as a Kathakali instructor, and from 1948, he toured extensively as a leader with Mrinalini Sarabhai's company. He served as the principal of Darpana Academy until his retirement in 1985, an association that facilitated his global performances and involvement in experimental productions like 'Manushyan'. Panicker was a prominent exponent of the Kavungal School of Kathakali (Kavungal Kalari), which is recognized for its rigorous training methods and overt physical interpretation of abhinaya. He is credited with introducing innovations to the dance form, particularly in the decorative movements known as 'kalasam'. His contributions also extended to the development of grammar and costumes specific to the Kavungal School. Renowned art historian K. P. S. Menon noted that secondary characters, often criticized by Kathakali scholars, attained the significance of perfected lead roles when Panicker portrayed them. After returning to Kerala, he attempted to establish his own Kathakali school, but a stroke left the effort unfinished. He passed away on November 27, 2007, in Erumappetty, Thrissur, at the age of 84 or 85.
