Kavungal Chathunni Panicker (1922-2007) was a distinguished Indian classical dancer, celebrated for his profound mastery of Kathakali, the traditional dance form of Kerala. Born in 1922 in Thichur, a small hamlet near Vadakkancherry in Kerala's Thrissur district, Panicker hailed from the illustrious Kavungal family, known for six generations of Kathakali artistes. He began his Kathakali training at the age of eleven in 1933, under the tutelage of his uncle, Sankara Panicker, for three years. He further honed his skills under Katambur Gopalan Nair. His debut performance took place in 1936 when he was fourteen. By the age of twenty, Panicker had formed his own Kathakali troupe. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1947 when he met renowned classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai, founder of Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, during a performance in Ooty. The following year, Sarabhai invited Panicker to join Darpana Academy as its principal, an offer he accepted. He remained with the institution until his retirement in 1985, a period during which he traveled globally with the group, performing and contributing to experimental productions like "Manushyan". Panicker was an exponent of the Kavungal School of Kathakali (Kavungal Kalari), known for its rigorous training and expressive abhinaya. He is credited with introducing innovations to the dance form, particularly in decorative movements (kalasam), and significantly contributed to the development of the Kavungal School's grammar and costumes. His notable performances included roles such as Hanuman in "Kalyana Saugandhikam" and "Thoranayudham", Raudrabhima in "Duryodhana Vadham", and Kattala (Hunter) in "Nalacharitham" and "Kiratham". Panicker received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1973. He was also honored with the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kerala Kalamandalam Fellowship, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship in 2003, and the Kerala State Kathakali Award in 2004. In recognition of his immense contributions to Indian classical dance, the Government of India bestowed upon him the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest Indian civilian award, in 2006. After retiring from Darpana, he attempted to establish a Kathakali school in Kerala but was incapacitated by a stroke. Kavungal Chathunni Panicker passed away on November 29, 2007, in Erumapetty, near his native village of Thichur.
