Keiko Watanabe is a distinguished Japanese exponent of Kuchipudi, an Indian classical dance form. Born in Japan, she embarked on her journey into Indian classical dance after being deeply impressed by a Kuchipudi performance during a visit to India in 1995. She began her formal training in Kuchipudi in 1996 under the tutelage of Smt. Sathyapriya Ramana and Ms. Sailaja, both disciples of the legendary Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. Furthering her expertise, Watanabe undertook advanced training from 2007 onwards with Smt. Uma Muralikrishna and Sri. Kishore Mosalikanti, who are also renowned Kuchipudi exponents. As of 2016, she was continuing her studies under Padmavani and Jaikishore Mosalikanti. Watanabe commenced her professional performing career by 2000. Her performances are celebrated for their authenticity, grace, and expressive quality, often challenging audience expectations of a Japanese artist performing an Indian dance form. She has participated in numerous government-sponsored programs and significant festivals in both India and Japan for over 15 years. Keiko Watanabe is dedicated to promoting Kuchipudi in Japan, where it is less known compared to other Indian classical dance styles like Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Kathak. To this end, she founded and serves as the artistic director of the KUCHIPUDI KEIKO DANCE SCHOOL in Tokyo, also known as Tokyo Natya Roopa, dividing her time between Chennai, India, and Tokyo, Japan.
