Kiran Ratna is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, renowned for her pioneering efforts in establishing and promoting the art form in Wales and beyond. She began her dance training at an early age in India with Kathak, later switching to Bharatanatyam in 1978 under the tutelage of Guru Chitraleka Bolar in the UK. Her advanced training continued in India with Ullal Mohan Kumar, her guru's guru. Kiran also holds a Masters in Electronics Engineering from Cardiff University, demonstrating a unique blend of artistic and academic pursuits. In 1980, Kiran Ratna introduced Bharatanatyam to Wales, marking a significant cultural milestone. From 1991, she dedicated herself full-time to the development of Bharatanatyam, founding Wales' first Indian Dance Company, 'The Kiran Ratna Company'. This company was later formalized as 'India Dance Wales' in 1998, with Kiran serving as its Artistic Director. She is widely regarded as a pioneer of classical Indian dance in Wales, having significantly contributed to its growth and visibility. Now based in Pangbourne, West Berkshire, she continues her work through India Dance BN, which is a continuation of India Dance Wales. Through this, she actively supports daughter companies in Wales and the South West, led by her trained students, ensuring the propagation of the art form. Throughout her career spanning over four decades, Kiran Ratna has directed, choreographed, and performed numerous innovative works, earning critical acclaim for her company. Her dedication has been instrumental in introducing British audiences to the flowing grace and exquisite precision of Bharatanatyam through extensive teaching, workshops, and captivating performances. As an international Examiner for the Classical Indian Dance faculty and a Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), she has trained many students, presenting numerous Arangetrams (professional debuts). Many of her disciples have gone on to become accomplished dancers and teachers themselves, extending her legacy. Her influence has produced excellent performing and teaching Bharatanatyam dancers of the next generation.
