Subha Kokubo Chakraborty commenced her dance training at the age of three. At fifteen, she joined the esteemed Mamata Shankar Ballet Troupe, where she specialized in the Uday Shankar creative dance style and toured various countries. She received her Bharatnatyam training under the tutelage of Guru Thankamani Kutty and Shri Kalamandalam Venkitt. Chakraborty holds a graduation in economics from Calcutta University. For 19 years, she has resided in Toyota, Aichi, Japan, with a mission to foster cultural exchange between Japan and India through dance. She is the founder of the Indian Classical Dance Troupe, through which she teaches both Uday Shankar creative dance style and Bharatnatyam in cities including Toyota, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Kawasaki. Her troupe actively performs Indian dances for international exchange and amity across Japan and globally. Chakraborty and her troupe were invited by the West Bengal Government to perform at the Uday Shankar dance festival in Kolkata in 1999, 2004, and 2008. She organized programs in Nagoya City in 2001, inviting Guru Kalamandalam Venkitt and three musicians from Kolkata. In 2003 and 2004, she organized events in Tokyo, Shizuoka, Toyota, and Nagoya, featuring Indian classical artistes to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The troupe also performed at the Banga Sammelan in Detroit, USA, in 2007 and in New Jersey, USA, in 2010. Beyond performing and teaching, Chakraborty contributes to Japan-India cultural communication through writing and lectures, and is the author of the book “Indo no Kaze, Nihon no Kaze (Winds of India, winds of Japan).”
