🪔 About

Kavalappara Narayanan Nair (1882–1948) was a prominent 20th-century Kathakali artiste and tutor from Kerala, South India. He was particularly renowned for his specialization in the "white-beard" (vella thaadi) Hanuman roles within the classical dance-drama. His iconic portrayal of the monkey-god Hanuman even inspired Malayalam poet Edasseri Govindan Nair to compose a poem titled "Lavanasuravadhathile Hanuman". Beyond Hanuman, Narayanan Nair also demonstrated versatility, excelling in virtuous characters such as Bahukan and Brihannala, anti-hero roles like Shishupalan and Keechakan, grotesque figures such as Raudra Bhiman, and various minor roles including Mannaan, Aanakkaran, Narasimham, Bheeru, and Yavanan. A native of Kavalappara, located east of Shoranur in the Palakkad district, Narayanan Nair received his foundational training under Guru Puthenveettil Sekhara Menon at the local Kaliyogam (Kathakali school) associated with the Kavalappara palace. His distinguished career included serving as an instructor at leading performing arts institutions such as Kerala Kalamandalam, PSV Natyasangham in Kottakkal, and Kadathanattu Kaliyogam. Notably, he was the sole Kathakali artiste from northern Kerala to be on the regular payrolls of the royal palace in Thiruvananthapuram. He was a contemporary of other Kathakali luminaries of his era, including Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon and Guru Kunchu Kurup. His teaching legacy is significant, having mentored numerous acclaimed artists who further propagated the Kathakali tradition.
