Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair (1916–2007) was a highly esteemed Kathakali artist from Kerala, India, renowned for his intellectual and imaginative stage presentations that infused new life into the four-century-old art form. Born in Vellinezhi village, Palakkad district, in 1916, Kumaran Nair began his training in the highly evolved Kalluvazhi style at the tender age of five under the tutelage of grand master Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon. His classmates at Kerala Kalamandalam included the legendary Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair. Early in his career, finding limited opportunities in Kerala, Kumaran Nair moved to Madras (Chennai). There, he gained recognition as a master choreographer, teaching dance for Tamil cinema stars like Ranjan and working closely with film icon M.G. Ramachandran. Despite these diverse experiences, he meticulously maintained the classical grammar of Kathakali in his performances. He briefly returned to Kerala Kalamandalam as a teacher between 1955 and 1957. Later, he taught at various Kathakali schools, including PSV Natyasangham, Kottakkal; Kalasadanam, Chunangad; and Varanakkottu Kaliyogam, Payyannur. His longest and most significant teaching stints were at Gandhi Seva Sadan (Sadanam Kathakali and Classical Arts Academy) at Peroor in Palakkad district, which he joined as the main teacher in 1960, and the International Centre for Kathakali in New Delhi, where he served as Chief Kathakali Master for about six years starting in 1975. Kumaran Nair was celebrated for his portrayal of heroic characters (satvika/pacha) and was adept at performing all types of Kathakali roles, including Kathi (villainous), Vella Thadi (pious), and Minukku (women and saints). His masterpieces included the role of Hanuman in `Kalyana Saugandhika`, `Toranayuddham`, and `Lavanasuravadham`, as well as Roudra Bheema in "Duryodhanavadham". He retired from the stage in 2004 and passed away in 2007.
