Kumari Kamala, also known as Kamala Lakshman and Kamala Lakshmi Narayanan, was a highly renowned Indian classical dancer and actress, celebrated for her mastery of the Bharatanatyam dance form, particularly the Vazhuvoor style. Born on June 16, 1934, in Mayuram (now Mayiladuthurai), Tamil Nadu, India, she began her dance training at an exceptionally young age, initially learning Kathak from Lachhu Maharaj in Bombay and later Bharatanatyam. Her talent was discovered at age four by filmmaker A.N. Kalyanasundaram Iyer, leading to her debut as a child dancer in Tamil films like "Valibar Sangham" (1938) and "Ramanama Mahimai" (1939). Her mother subsequently moved to Madras (Chennai) to facilitate Kamala's intensive Bharatanatyam training under esteemed gurus Kattumannarkoil Muthukumara Pillai and the renowned Vazhuvoor B. Ramaiyah Pillai. Under Vazhuvoor Ramaiyah Pillai, she became a leading exponent of the Vazhuvoor bani, a style characterized by its lyrical grace, fluidity, expressive abhinaya, and refined movement vocabulary. Kamala's extensive film career included appearances in almost 100 Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films, where her dance sequences played a crucial role in popularizing and legitimizing Bharatanatyam for mass audiences. Her performances in films such as "Naam Iruvar" (1947) are credited with sparking a "cultural revolution" and revitalizing the dance form. Kumari Kamala achieved international recognition, performing for Queen Elizabeth II during her coronation festivities in 1953 and undertaking international tours to countries like China and Japan in the late 1950s. In 1975, she served as a Branta Professorship at Colgate University, teaching dance and introducing students to the philosophy of Indian classical movement. In 1980, she relocated to New York City, USA, where she established her own dance school, Shri Bharatha Kamalalaya, in Long Island. Through her academy, she dedicated decades to teaching and nurturing generations of dancers, significantly contributing to the global dissemination of Bharatanatyam. Kumari Kamala passed away in California on November 23, 2025, at the age of 91.
