Kumari Swarnamukhi is a highly acclaimed Indian classical dancer, particularly renowned for her mastery of Bharatanatyam. She began her dance training at the tender age of three, learning from Nattuvanar Duraisamy and her father, Bhoopal. Her father, deeply interested in Karanas (sculptural dance poses), researched ancient temples and taught her all 108 Karanas, making her the first and, reportedly, only person to have mastered and performed them. Swarnamukhi's illustrious career saw her represent India in 52 countries, performing extensively across Europe, America, Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. Her international dance programs were so demanding that she would often perform in London in the morning, Paris in the afternoon, and Frankfurt at night. Her performances garnered appreciation from numerous presidents, prime ministers, and world dignitaries. Former Indian President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan famously called her "The Boneless Wonder" and gifted her his first presidential salary. She also ventured into cinema, performing traditional dances in several films across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam languages, including 'Rajarishi', 'Punnammi Nag', and 'Pournami'. Swarnamukhi established dance schools in the USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. In 1988, after nearly 40 years in her dance career, Swarnamukhi converted to Christianity, changing her name to Veronica Swarnamukhi. After 1991, she ceased performing on stage to dedicate herself to social work, assisting leprosy patients and the underprivileged.
