Ravi Varma Kunjikkuttan Thampuran was an Indian classical dance figure, primarily known as a Kathakali artist, in addition to being a Malayalam film actor and writer. Born in 1936 as a member of the Kochi Dynasty in Kerala, India, he received his training in Kathakali from the esteemed Kerala Kalamandalam. His contributions to the art form extended beyond performance, as he authored a book titled "Aalukal Arangukal," which delves into the lives of Kathakali artists. Beyond his classical dance pursuits, Kunjikkuttan Thampuran had a prolific career in cinema, appearing in more than fifty films, including telefilms and serials. Some of his notable film credits include "Mookkilla Rajyathu," "Ulladakkam," "God Father," "Oridathu," "Kalyana Raman," and "Ivory Merchant." He also featured in the Hollywood film "Cotton Mary," directed by Ismail Merchant. He was a follower of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and even wrote an Attakatha titled 'Kurukshethra' for the party. Ravi Varma Kunjikkuttan Thampuran passed away on August 24, 2010, at the age of 73 or 74. He was survived by his wife, Sathi Varma, who manages Kathakali Kendram, and his children, R. V. Vasudevan and Suma Varma.
