L. Ibemhal Devi, an eminent figure in Indian classical dance, was born in 1879 and passed away in December 1974. She hailed from a distinguished lineage of dancers deeply rooted in the sacred Nata Kirtan tradition of Manipur. Her foundational training in Manipuri dance was guided by esteemed gurus such as Kanhai Sharma, Khomdan Sharma, and Meiei Singh. Ibemhal Devi dedicated a significant portion of her life to the service of Shri Govindji, the principal temple of Manipur, where she continuously performed as a Rasa dancer and Sutradhari from 1892 to 1940. Her profound contributions to the enrichment and preservation of Manipuri dance earned her widespread recognition. For her exceptional eminence in the field of dance, she was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Manipuri Dance in 1974, the highest Indian recognition in the performing arts. Additionally, she received decorations for her artistic achievements from the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad and the Manipur State Kala Akademi. Her life's work solidified her legacy as a pivotal artist in the Manipuri dance tradition.
