Lajja Sambhavnath is a distinguished Indian classical Kathak dancer, choreographer, and researcher, known for her innovative approach to the traditional dance form. She received extensive training from eminent gurus, including Padmabhushan Kumudini Lakhia, under whom she also completed her UGC awarded Research Fellowship titled “Contemporary Sensibilities vis a vis the heritage of Kathak”. Her foundational training in the Jaipur Gharana was guided by Late Pt Sunderlal Gangani, Pt Harish Gangani, and Pt Jagdish Gangani. Sambhavnath is a post-graduate gold medallist in Performing Arts – Kathak from MS University, Baroda, and also holds a graduate degree in Clothing and Textiles from the same university. Based in Lisbon, Portugal, and Ahmedabad, India, Lajja Sambhavnath actively bridges Indian and Portuguese cultures through her art. She has choreographed numerous solos and group productions, often incorporating fusion elements, such as blending Kathak with Indonesian gamelan. Her notable choreographic works include “Café Oriente” set to composer Cesar Viana's music and “Uma Canção de país Longínquo,” which interprets Portuguese literature by Fernando Pessoa and Luis de Camões through Kathak. She also co-created “Sole to Soul,” a contemporary Kathak performance with Portuguese and Indian artists, and “SAMAPADA,” a collaboration with Bharatanatyam dancer Tarikavalli, exploring the confluence of North and South Indian classical dance styles. Sambhavnath is also a dedicated teacher, conducting masterclasses and serving as a visiting faculty at various academic institutions, and has presented papers at international forums like the World Forum in Den Hague and the SIEF Congress in Lisbon. She conceived, curated, and directed the virtual classical dance show “Serão de Dança Clássica Indiana” in 2020, featuring Kathak performances by herself and her students.
