🪔 About

Lalitha Venkat is a distinguished Bharatanatyam guru based in Chennai, India, known for her dedication to the Melattur style of dance. Her extensive training began under the tutelage of the legendary Guru Mangudi Dorairaja Iyer, who established the Melattur style of Bharatanatyam. Following his passing in 1980, Lalitha Venkat sought guidance from Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, who encouraged her to uphold and preserve the Melattur legacy. She continued her training in the Melattur style under Kanchana Sharma, a direct disciple of Mangudi Dorairaja Iyer. Beyond her foundational training, Lalitha Venkat pursued advanced studies in various aspects of Bharatanatyam. She received specialized training in abhinaya, the art of expressive interpretation, from the renowned doyen Kalanidhi Narayanan. Her expertise in nattuvangam, the rhythmic accompaniment and direction of a dance performance, was honed under Bhagavatulu Sitarama Sharma. Additionally, she delved into the theoretical underpinnings of dance by attending two residential camps on Natya Shastra conducted by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and also took veena lessons from Kalpakam Swaminathan. In 1987, Lalitha Venkat founded her own institution, Kala Sadhanalaya, in Chennai. Through this academy, she imparts comprehensive training in the Melattur style of Bharatanatyam, nattuvangam, abhinayam, and dance theory, alongside an intensive study of India's rich cultural heritage. Her philosophy of dance evolved significantly through her study of Vedanta under Swami Dayananda Saraswathi and Swami Paramarthananda, transforming her perception of dance from mere entertainment to a path of spiritual enlightenment, or moksha sadhana, for both the performer and the audience. Lalitha Venkat is recognized as one of the dynamic new generation Bharatanatyam teachers in Chennai, actively contributing to the art form by encouraging her students to become teachers themselves, thus ensuring the continuity of the guru-shishya parampara.
