🪔 About
Laurissa Vibhuti is a Bharatanatyam dancer and the director of The Koothambalam School of Bharatanatyam, located in Longmont, Colorado. Her journey in dance began at the age of four with formal ballet training. At 15, she shifted her focus to Hatha Yoga, Bharatanatyam, and Sanskrit, pursuing studies in both the United States and India. She received her traditional Bharatanatyam training from her guru, Srimati Shyamala, who was a master of the T. Balasaraswati Style. Laurissa Vibhuti completed her arangetram, a ceremonial debut performance, in 2004. Notably, she is recognized as the only non-Indian to have completed the formal arangetram margam (sequence or path) within her teacher's lineage. Her guru, Srimati Shyamala Mohanraj (1941-2015), was the founder of The Koothambalam School and a direct disciple of the legendary Bharatanatyam dancer Srimati T. Balasaraswati. Shyamala Mohanraj had her own Arangetram in 1978 and was known for teaching, performing, and lecturing extensively, sharing the depth and beauty of the temple arts of South India. Laurissa Vibhuti continues this lineage through her directorship and teaching at the school.
